Things
you can do to help you get into college:
- Get good grades
- Do community service. To find some
community service opportunities,
ask your counselor or go to www.detroitkids.org
(Go to "Activities for
Youth" , "Other activities and places to play" and then "community
service")
- Have a job.
- Participate in after school
activities: sports, school clubs etc. If there is nothing at your
school that interests you, find an after school activity at
detroitkids.org
(click on "Activities for youth" and then choose what
you are interested in)
- Practice and take the ACT or
SAT
(depending on what college you are going to). You can check out the
practice test book at the Detroit Public
Library and you can find
tutoring for the tests by going to detroitkids.org
(click on
"Activities for youth", then "education", then "college preparation").
- Start looking at websites for the colleges and
careers that interest you
- Start thinking about if you want to go away to
college or stay around here
- Start looking for scholarships
- Get to know the counselor at your school. It is their
job to help you get through this process.

Some Local Colleges
(If
the local school you are looking for is not listed, go to google
and type in the name of the school in quotes and then Michigan because
many schools have similar names across the US. Example: "Baker College
Michigan".)
