Numbers/Counting
  • Double 6 Dominoes  Get the ones that are not in color so kids will have to count the dots, not identify by color.
  • Bingo - Yes, just regular bingo helps them learn to identify numbers.
Addition/Subtraction
Money/Investing
  • Pretend and Play Calculator Cash Register
  • Fake Money: You can find this at the dollar store.
  • Pit Card Game: This fast paced, yelling, insane, ancient card game teaches about the commodities market to kids. Great with 8 or 9 kids. One of the best games ever invented.
  • Monopoly The classic game to learn about real estate and counting money.  Never get ones with the credit cards - they don't learn to count that way.
  • Shopping Spree: This game they go around the board collecting one thing from each store and the winner is whoever finishes shopping first. Fabulous for teaching about money and making change. First grade and up.
  • Stock Market Tycoon: This is an excellent game to  learn about the stock market. It takes a little while to explain the game, but once they get it, the game isn't so complicated. Kids buy stock and then the stocks go up or down as the game goes on.  Middle school and up.
  • The Price is Right Game - New 2nd Edition:  This game is hard to set up, but kids learn the relative prices of everything. This is a good life skill to have.  About 8 years old and up.
Story Problems
Multiplication
  • Flash Cards -  Just memorize those multiplication tables. Write them on the sidewalk with chalk, use wipe off books from the teacher store, write them in crayon, say them out loud.  Go one number set at a time. As they get each number, mark it off on a checklist so they  see what they have left to learn. Never never never count up. They should just be imprinted forever in their little noodles. Remind them that they only have to go through this once and they will know it forever.
  • Multiplication Bingo - Play it and give them a cheat sheet.
  • Snap It Up Math Card Game, Multiplication - Play this game once they know most of their multiplication tables to review and cement them in their heads.
  • Write-A-Mat Multiplication Problems Placemat - use this wipe off mat to save paper. When your child knows them, pass it on to another kid.
Fractions
  • Fractions Bingo - The easiest way to learn fractions. Explain how a whole is cut into pieces then give them plenty of time to count the pieces up on the bingo sheets. Even first graders can play this.
Negative Numbers
  • Maya Madness Game - A great way to practice  using negative numbers. It takes a little while to go through the directions, but it's not a complicated game and its fun.
Algebra Geometry
Metric General Reference
  • How Math Works  - This book really explains the origins of math and gives different hands on projects to help kids understand. Good for the visual learners or kids who won't just follow math rules and want to know why.
  • Scholastic Explains Math Homework - a reference book for every parent who doesn't exactly remember how to do math.
